Bandsaw blades for mild steel
Mild steel does not need an exotic edge: a bi-metal blade with an HSS tooth line on a flexible alloy backing handles it all day. The real decision is pitch, matched to your section size and wall thickness.
The problem with cutting mild steel
Mild steel is the bread and butter of every fabrication saw, which is exactly why it gets taken for granted. It is not especially hard, it does not work harden the way stainless does and it asks nothing unusual of the tooth material. Almost every failure on mild steel traces back to pitch: a tooth count that does not match the section on the table.
Run a coarse blade into thin-walled tube and too few teeth carry the load; teeth catch the wall, hook and strip. Run a fine blade into solid bar and the gullets fill before they clear the cut, so swarf packs between the teeth, the blade rubs instead of cutting and heat does the damage the material never could. Box sections and angle add interrupted cuts, hammering each tooth as it enters and leaves the wall.
The right edge for mild steel is a bi-metal band: a high speed steel tooth line welded to a flexible alloy backing. The HSS edge stays hard at cutting temperature while the backing flexes around the wheels without cracking. Match the pitch to section size and wall thickness and a good bi-metal blade does the rest.

Getting the cut right

Match pitch to the section
Pitch is the decision that matters in mild steel. Solid bar wants a coarser tooth with gullets big enough to carry the chip through the full cut. Thin wall tube wants a finer pitch so enough teeth share the load. Judge the blade by the material thickness the teeth actually pass through, not the overall size of the workpiece.
Break the blade in gently
A new bi-metal blade has razor-sharp tooth tips that chip if you bury them at full feed straight away. Ease the feed for the first few cuts so the tips wear to a stable edge, then bring the pressure up. A blade broken in properly outlasts one hammered from its first cut.
Read the swarf
The chip tells you whether feed and speed are right. Tightly curled chips with a consistent colour mean the teeth are cutting cleanly. Thin powdery swarf means the blade is rubbing: increase the feed. Heavy blued chips mean you are forcing the cut or running too fast: back off before the edge burns.
Set the machine up properly
Tension the band to the machine maker's setting, bring the guides as close to the work as the cut allows and clamp sections so they cannot rotate. Position box and angle so the teeth enter the wall at an angle rather than slamming into a flat face. A running wire brush keeps the gullets clear.
