Insulation cutting blades and wire
Rigid PIR boards and layered product want an edge that bites rather than skates. Wavy and scallop bandknives slice rigid and layered insulation dust-free with a clean face, welded to your machine's loop length in the UK.
The problem with cutting insulation
Insulation is not one material. Rigid PIR board, layered composite product and fibrous rockwool batts behave differently under an edge. A blade chosen for one will misbehave in the others. A toothed bandsaw blade tears at foam and fibre rather than cutting it: the teeth rip the cell structure, throw dust into the air and the machine and leave a ragged face that spoils the board.
Rigid and layered product punishes the wrong knife edge too. A plain straight edge can skate over slippery facings and compressed layers instead of biting in, wandering off line before the cut has properly started. A wavy or scallop bandknife edge grips the surface and slices through in a single dust-free pass, leaving a clean face.
Fibrous mineral wool is different again. It compresses under a blade rather than presenting a solid face to cut, so a plain edge crushes and drags the fibres instead of parting them. A profiled wavy edge grips the surface and starts the cut cleanly, keeping torn faces and waste to a minimum.

Match the edge to the product
Rigid PIR and layered boards want a wavy or scallop bandknife: the profiled edge bites into slippery facings that a straight edge skates over. The wavy edge also handles fibrous and layered product, gripping the surface so the cut starts cleanly rather than crushing the material. Choose by what is on the table, not by habit.
Let the edge do the work
A bandknife slices rather than saws. Forcing the feed compresses the board ahead of the edge, deflects the thin band and leaves a stepped or torn face. Feed steadily and let the edge part the material at its own pace. The same discipline applies to wire: tension does the cutting, not pressure.
Keep the band tensioned and tracked
A bandknife is thin and flexible by design, so it relies on the machine for its stiffness. Check tension and tracking before a run: a slack or badly tracked band wanders in the cut and produces wedge-shaped slices. On wire machines the same rule applies, since an under-tensioned wire bows away from the cut line in dense product.
Order to your machine's length
Bandknives run as welded loops, so measure the loop length from the machine manual or an old band rather than guessing. The wavy bandknife is published in widths from 10 to 32mm and the scallop from 10 to 25mm; fit the size your machine was built to run and we weld the band to length in the UK.
