Bandknife blades

Continuous knife edges rather than saws: thin, flexible bands honed to part foam, insulation, leather, textiles and packaging materials with a clean face, no dust and no kerf, welded to the loop length your machine takes.

A knife, not a saw

A bandsaw blade cuts by removing material: every tooth takes a chip, makes dust and costs you a kerf. A bandknife does neither. It is a thin, flexible band of steel carrying a continuous knife edge, hardened and honed so it parts the material instead of machining it away. The result is a clean cut face, no dust and no kerf loss, which is why foam, insulation, leather and textiles are cut with knives rather than saws.

The edge form does the specialising. A straight edge suits general foam and soft materials, a wavy edge bites into slippery layered product, a scallop edge covers densities from soft and memory foam up to rigid board and a toothed edge adds bite where a plain knife would drag. Whichever edge the product asks for, every band is welded to the loop length your machine takes; and when the work needs teeth and a kerf after all, our bandsaw blade families take over.

The bandknife question is not pitch or set: it is which edge profile matches your product. These four Slicer37 profiles cover the range, and each card links to the full published specification.

Two specialised patterns complete the family: CNC contour band knives, made narrow and flexible for profiling foam on CNC contour cutting machines, and peeler and splitter blades, wide bands that take foam, leather, cork and textiles down to thickness.

What bandknives cut

MaterialCutting guidance
PU foamStraight edge territory. Soft PU parts cleanly under a keen knife and a light feed; a dulling edge shows itself first as drag lines on the cut face, so rehone or change the band before the foam starts to tear.
RebondBonded crumb is denser and less forgiving than virgin foam. A scallop edge keeps its bite through the density changes; feed steadily and let the knife do the work rather than forcing the block.
Rigid insulationRigid board is where a plain edge can drag or skate. Wavy and scallop edges cut it dust-free with a clean face; keep the board supported so the cut does not close on the band.
LeatherA drawn knife cut that must never snag the grain. A keen straight edge cuts to shape, and dedicated peeler and splitter blades take hides and panels down to an even thickness.
TextilesLayered fabric is slippery and shifts under the knife. A wavy edge bites into the stack without dragging threads; keep the layers clamped and the edge keen for a cleanly released cut.
Packaging materialsMixed densities from soft foam to sponge and scourer. Straight edges handle the soft end; the toothed bandknife adds bite where dense product resists a plain knife.
CorkFriable and easily crushed, so cut quality lives in the edge condition. A keen wide band slices cork to thickness cleanly; steady feed and light pressure stop the surface crumbling.

Edge form, width and the toothed exception

This family carries published widths from 3 to 100mm across the family and pitch options of 4 and 6 TPI on the toothed pattern; each product page lists its own options. Three general rules narrow them down quickly.

  1. Choose the edge before anything else

    A knife has no pitch to pick: the edge form is the specification. Match it to the product first (straight for general foam, wavy for slippery layered material, scallop for a wide density range, toothed for dense product) and the rest of the decision is width and length.

  2. Treat toothed bandknives like saws

    The toothed Slicer37 follows the saw rule of thumb: keep at least 4 and no more than 24 teeth in the work, so the edge bites without snatching. Its published pitch options are listed on the product page; deeper stacks want the coarser of them.

  3. Let width follow the cut path

    Wide bands resist deflection and hold a flat, straight face through deep blocks and splitting work. Contour cutting reverses the rule: the narrower the band, the tighter the radius it follows, which is exactly what CNC contour knives are made for.
